New for 2007 - Ghosts of York You are in the depths of the most haunted city in England and can feel death and restlessness fill the air as a chill grips your very bones. Through the silence comes a haunting wail and then suddenly you are confronted by a vengeful ghostly presence that leaves you paralysed by fear...will you escape?
The dungeon operates on the basis of tours which start every 7 minuets and last between 1 and 1.5 hours. In these tours visitors are led around a sequence of shows and exhibitions which are loosely based on historical events and practices. [1]
The Great Plague show is set in 1348 with a recreation of medieval York streets and culminates with a show from an actor playing a plague doctor. During the tour actors playing Eric Bloodaxe, a co-conspirator of Guy Fawkes and Dick Turpin tell visitors gruesome stories.[2]
Ghosts of York: The new feature for 2007, Ghosts of York uses atmospheric special effects to bring some of York’s most spooky ghost stories to life. Visitors sit in a recreation of the Golden Fleece pub where the reasons behind York being England’s most haunted city become more and more apparent…
Labyrinth of the Lost Legion: A disorientating and eerie mirror maze based the story of a Roman legion, who mysteriously went missing in York in the year AD70.
Judgement of Sinners: A really funny show depicting a particularly dark time in British history in the 18th century where draconian laws meant that over 200 crimes were punishable by death. It sees the visitors dragged in front of an eccentric judge and various people called into the dock to be sentenced for crimes as varied as witchcraft to weeing in the wells and poisoning the water supplies!.
Torture Chamber: Head to the depths of the Dungeon where genuine torture instruments from the past are shown in grizzly exhibits. Visitors are lined against the wall where the resident ‘torturer’ picks out one of the crowd for him to demonstrate ‘techniques’ on. A grizzly subject matter, dealt with in a slightly scary but often uproariously funny way.
Opening Hours: Open: April-Sept 10:30am-5pm, Easter, Whitsun & Summer Holidays 10am-5:30pm, Nov-Jan 11am-4pm. Oct, Feb, Mar 10:30am-4.30pm.
